This is how I replaced a bad thermostat in a 2007 Mazda 3 (2.3L) that was in the shop for check engine light. Code was P0126 and since replacing the thermostat no check engine light has come on. I call that a victory. Use common sense if you attempt to do this repair on your own and you should be fine.
