Wheel bearing damage can occur in different ways. You can often hear the typical rolling or humming noises that are often audible when cornering. There are many different causes. Defective seals, for example, allow spray water to penetrate the inside of the wheel bearing. As a result, the grease is flushed out, causing high friction between the balls or rollers and the bearing rings. The surfaces are thus damaged and the above-mentioned noises occur.

At this point, it is time to replace the wheel bearings. However, as there are different designs and therefore different repair methods, you should pay attention to a few things. Otherwise, you could damage the new wheel bearing during installation.

This video shows an example of a wheel bearing repair on the front axle of a Skoda Roomster. This wheel bearing unit is the so-called generation 2.1 with a locking ring. This is a 2-row angular contact ball bearing with an integrated wheel flange and a locking collar, which additionally secures the wheel bearing unit in the steering knuckle. The locking collar must locate in the groove provided in the steering knuckle during installation. Special tools must be used for this during installation.

The repair method shown here is the ideal repair procedure.
