How to remove and replace the power steering servo pump on a right hand drive Astra - no need to remove the subframe!

Sorry about the film lighting it's not too good, but the verbal description and various views should tell you all you need to know to do the job. First time you do it it takes about 3 hours to remove it and 3 hours to put it back, as it's in such a tight space. Handling the heavy pump to remove it, passing it carefully down behind the engine is a two man job - one working from above, one from below. Refitting is the reverse of removal.

Steps: (servo = hydraulic power assisted steering pump)
remove battery completely from the car
unclip and slide forward the coolant reservoir - pull it out of the way (with pipes still attached)
undo the (13mm head) bolt above the unit from which the brake pipes emerge - which loosens the servo pump cradle top (this bolt is normally hidden by the fluid reservoir above it)
remove the large electrical connector from the servo (grey handgrip, fairly easy)
remove the small electrical connector from the servo (pull blue tab left, and/or prize off carefully)
undo the Allen bolt (internal hexagonal head) to remove clamped-in hydraulic pipes from the servo
pull out the hydraulic pipes (one attached to clamp, one held in by same clamp, with a flange)
undo the three 6mm flanged nuts underneath, which hold the servo to its cradle (difficult, little space)
withdraw the servo (bottom first, electrics up) across the back of the engine (2 people needed)
lower the servo down and free of the car
replace in reverse order

Some channels have said that the car's computer has to be partially reprogrammed for the new servo pump - well mine works fine without any of that. This is a fiddly but not technically demanding fix, which works smoothly and will hopefully save you loads of money. I wouldn't like to have to do it without an inspection pit - even with one we struggled with the small spaces. The car uses normal synthetic power steering fluid - you'll need just under half a litre to fill up the steering fluid bottle. Have fun!
