BMW Brake Hose Replacement Step by Step, Including the Bleed

Brake hose cracked, bulging, or weeping on your BMW? Flexible hoses are a wear item and they get overlooked because they sit out of sight behind the wheel. When one fails it can go from a slow weep to a sudden loss of pressure at that corner, so it is not a job to put off. It also opens the hydraulic system, which means bleeding afterwards is not optional.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU START

Opening a brake line lets air into the system, and air compresses where brake fluid does not. Until the system is properly bled, the pedal will be soft or go to the floor and the car will not stop. Do not move the vehicle until the pedal is firm and you have checked every fitting for leaks.

A few rules are not optional. Support the car on proper stands. Use new copper crush washers on banjo bolts, never the old ones. Use a flare nut wrench on the hard line so you do not round the fitting. Torque every fitting to spec. Never let the reservoir run dry while bleeding, because air drawn into the ABS unit is very hard to remove and usually needs a scan tool to cycle the pump.

If you are not confident bleeding brakes, this is the wrong job to learn on. There is no shame in doing the removal and having a shop finish the bleed.

WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS

✅ Inspecting hoses for cracking, bulging, and weeping
✅ Why hoses fail internally with no outward sign
✅ Safely lifting and supporting the vehicle
✅ Cracking the hard line fitting without rounding it
✅ Removing the banjo bolt at the caliper
✅ Fitting new copper crush washers every time
✅ Routing the new hose without twisting it
✅ Checking clearance at full lock and full suspension travel
✅ Torquing the fittings to specification
✅ Bleeding the system in the correct sequence
✅ Testing pedal firmness and checking for leaks before driving

WHY HOSES FAIL

Rubber brake hoses age from the inside out. Heat cycling, fluid, road salt, and ozone break the rubber down over years, and the failure often starts internally where you cannot see it. A hose can look perfectly fine and still have a collapsed inner liner acting as a one way valve, holding pressure at the caliper and dragging that brake.

That is why a car pulling to one side under braking, or one wheel running much hotter than the others, often traces back to a hose rather than a caliper. Outward signs are surface cracking, a bulge under pressure, dampness at either fitting, and chafing where the hose has rubbed.

APPLICABLE MODELS AND GENERATIONS

The procedure is broadly the same across the range:

3 Series: E46 1999-2006, E90 E91 E92 E93 2006-2013, F30 F31 F34 2012-2019, G20 2019-2025
5 Series: E39 1997-2003, E60 E61 2004-2010, F10 F11 2011-2016, G30 2017-2023
7 Series: E65 E66 2002-2008, F01 F02 2009-2015, G11 G12 2016-2022
1, 2, 4 and 6 Series across E, F and G generations
X Series: X1, X3, X5, X6 across E, F and G generations
Z4: E85 E86 2003-2008, E89 2009-2016

Hose lengths and fittings are chassis specific, so order by VIN. Front and rear differ, and some models use different lengths for M Sport or larger brake packages.

RELATED MAKES AND SHARED PROCEDURES

The same approach applies to MINI Cooper across the R and F generations and to Rolls-Royce models sharing BMW brake hardware.

Flexible brake hoses work identically on every modern vehicle, so this transfers to Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, Porsche, Volvo, Land Rover, and most Japanese and domestic makes. Banjo bolts, crush washers, and bleeding order are universal.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Brake fluid weeping or dripping at the caliper or bracket
Visible cracking or a bulge in the rubber
Car pulling to one side under braking
One wheel noticeably hotter than the others after a drive
Brake fluid level dropping with no other visible leak

QUICK TIP

Replace hoses in pairs across an axle. They age at the same rate, so if one has failed the other is not far behind, and doing both at once means bleeding the system once instead of twice.

Two things save a lot of grief. Always fit new copper crush washers on the banjo bolt, one each side of the fitting. They deform once to seal, and reusing them is a very common cause of a weep that no amount of retightening fixes. And when you route the new hose, turn the steering to full lock both ways and check clearance through full suspension travel before dropping the car. A hose touching a tyre or suspension arm will wear through, and that failure happens without warning.
