BMW Z3 ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement

The ABS wheel speed sensor in each wheel hub monitors road wheel rotation and sends an electronic signal to the ABS / ASC or ABS / DSC module. This signal is used to calculate road wheel speed to help with ABS braking and stability control features.

When an ABS wheel speed sensor fails, the ABS module loses road wheel speed for the corresponding wheel and sets a fault code for the ABS wheel speed signal. When a fault code is set, the ABS warning light illuminates. Although you don't need a scan tool to replace a speed sensor per se, you have to scan the module and read the fault codes to determine which speed sensor is the problem. Keep in mind that other problems can illuminate the ABS warning light, so be sure to scan and read fault codes before replacing parts. If needed, you can swap ABS sensors side to side to see if the problem follows the sensor. If so, you know the sensor is faulty.

Wheel speed sensors are bolted to each wheel hub and are therefore susceptible to damage from impacts, road grime and brake dust. In this tech article, I will go over how to replace the front and rear wheel speed sensors.

Keep in mind that when your car was serviced before, parts may have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches. Also, make sure the replacement wheel speed sensor is correct for your exact model.

Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle. If you're working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Do not work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability.

Vehicle models change and evolve, as they grow older, so the vehicle shown in our illustrations may vary slightly from yours. If something seems different, let us know and share your info to help other users. Do you have questions or want to add to the article? Leave a comment below.
