--- REMOVE AIR FILTER HOUSINGS FOR ACCESS ---
In order to remove the BMW E60 engine cover(s), you first have to remove the cabin microfilter housing. This video shows 6-cylinder model. The cabin microfilter housing remains the same throughout all years. First, we will remove the cabin microfilter housing.
Working on the left side of the engine bay, locate the cabin microfilter lid.
Lift the BMW 5-series cabin microfilter lid to remove it.
Working at the right side lid, disconnect the hood switch electrical connector by squeezing the release tab and pulling it straight off the switch.
Working at the center of the cabin microfilter housing on the BMW E60, lift the wire harness shield up in the direction of the green arrow to remove it.
Working at the center of the cabin microfilter housing, remove the center support by releasing the locking tab and sliding it in the direction of the yellow arrow.
Pull the rubber seal off the cabin microfilter housing to remove it.
Working at the left side of the wiper cowl, remove the T25 Torx screw.
Working under the BMW E60 hood strut, pull the rubber drain up to remove it.
Lift up the lower microfilter housing to remove it from the vehicle.
Once removed, be sure the drains are clean and not full of debris like my vehicle.
Using a trim panel tool, remove the center rivet from both wiring harness bracket-mounting rivets.
Pull the mounting bracket off the support brace of your BMW E60.
Rock the plastic engine cover until it is free.
--- REPLACING THE SPARK PLUGS AND COILS ---
BMW E60 models equipped with a 6-cylinder engine utilize an individual ignition coil for each spark plug, referred to as coil over plug (green arrows). When servicing your spark plugs be sure the engine is cool and leave yourself about an hour to do the job. Be careful not to drop a spark plug. If you do, replace it. The spark plug insulator can crack and can lead to an engine misfire. Remove the engine cover on the cylinder head. See our tech article on engine cover removing. This video shows E60 model with a N52 6-cylinder engine.
Unlock the BMW E60 ignition coil electrical connector by pulling the tab up 90°. Next, slide the electrical connector out of the ignition coil.
Remove the ignition coil from the cylinder head by pulling it straight up. If the coil resists, twist it when pulling up to break it free from the spark plug. The ignition coil rubber boot can become stuck to the spark plug over time.
You can also use a flathead screwdriver to lever the coil up and out of the cylinder head. Be very careful using this method as the coil is made of plastic and easily damaged. If you find that engine oil has contaminated the ignition coil boot, you will have to repair the oil leak and replace the ignition coil. The source of the oil leak will likely be the valve cover gasket.
Using a 5/8-inch thin-wall spark plug socket on a 12-inch extension, remove the spark plug from the cylinder head. Late 6-cylinder engines: If your spark plug socket does not fit into the spark plug hole, you can remove the ignition coil insulator from the valve cover. Use 90 degree tip snap ring pliers to grab the insulator holes and squeeze. Then pull the insulator up and out of the BMW E60 cylinder head. This is for vehicles with plastic valve covers only.
