►After lots of abuse, your BMW F30's rear wheel bearings are prone to failure. Its hard work providing a wheel's ability to roll, and the repeated hits they take being a part of the suspension makes them a wear item. Typically, your rear wheel bearings will make it to 80,000, but it's around then when you can begin to hear the warning signs a failing bearing gives off.

When the bearing fails, it's because the rollers within it have degraded due to heat and friction. This causes play to develop, which is followed by a humming or whirring noise from the affected bearing. In extreme cases, a bad bearing can cause excessive play at the wheel, leading to sketchy handling characteristics. Luckily, the F30's rear wheel bearings are a bolt-in affair, making them a snap to replace at home.
