BMW ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement Step by Step
ABS and DSC lights on and the code points to one wheel? The sensor is a cheap part and the job is a single bolt, which makes this one of the easiest wins in BMW diagnostics. The catch is getting the old one out. These sensors corrode into the hub carrier over years of road salt, and pulling straight on a seized sensor snaps the body off and leaves the tip buried in the housing.
BEFORE YOU START
Support the car on proper stands, never on a jack alone. Note that while the ABS light is on you have no anti lock function and no stability control, so allow extra distance until the repair is finished and verified.
Do not damage the encoder ring. On many BMW models the sensor reads a magnetic ring built into the wheel bearing seal rather than a separate toothed ring, and that ring is easily ruined by scraping, magnets, or metal filings. Damage it and the fix becomes a wheel bearing, not a sensor.

WHY THESE SENSORS SEIZE
The sensor sits in a bore in an aluminium hub carrier while the sensor body is steel or plastic in a metal sleeve. Add years of water and road salt and the two corrode together hard. People grab the wire, pull, and the body shears leaving the tip locked in place.
The way around it is patience. Soak the base with penetrating oil and give it time to work. Then twist the sensor back and forth in the bore rather than pulling, which breaks the corrosion seal without loading the body. Only once it turns freely should you draw it out.
If it does snap, the tip has to be drilled or picked out without scoring the bore, and on bad ones the hub carrier comes off the car. That is why the soak and twist step is worth ten minutes.

Front and rear sensors are usually different parts, and left and right can differ too because of cable length and routing. Order by VIN and by corner.

QUICK TIP
Before you order a sensor, pull the old one and look at what it reads. A surprising number of these faults are not the sensor at all. Rust, scale, or a chipped tooth on the reluctor ring produces identical symptoms, and on models with a magnetic encoder ring built into the bearing seal, a damaged or demagnetised ring does the same. Fitting a new sensor to a bad ring changes nothing.
Also inspect the harness where it runs from the hub up into the body. That section flexes every time the suspension moves, and after enough years the conductors crack inside the insulation where you cannot see the break. Flex it by hand while watching live data if you can. A
