This BMW Electric power steering rack is a very common problem for the BMW Z4, 3-Series and 1-Series built between 2006 and 2016. The common reported fault is complete loss of power steering with no communication to the steering system via diagnostics.

The problem is caused by the failure of the electric motor part of the steering rack. In order to resolve the problem you will need to remove the motor from the steering rack. This video demonstrates how to do this without damaging the splines of the motor.
