The RIGHT Way to Swap Mazda CX-5 Control Arms (Step-by-Step)

This video shows you the correct way to replace the front lower control arms on a 2013–2024 Mazda CX-5. If you are hearing a clunking noise when hitting brakes or driving over speed bumps, or if your front tires are wearing unevenly, your control arm bushings are likely torn. We’ll walk you through the removal, the trick to clearing the subframe, and the most important step: indexing (clocking) the suspension so your new bushings don't fail prematurely.
This repair applies to:
2013–2016 Mazda CX-5 (First Generation)
2017–2024 Mazda CX-5 (Second Generation)
(Also similar for Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 platforms of the same era)
Parts & Specifications
Component: Front Lower Control Arm (Left/Right)
Torque Specs: * Front Pivot Bolt: 110–127 lb-ft
Rear Bushing Bolts: 94–116 lb-ft
Ball Joint Pinch Bolt: 32–42 lb-ft
Pro Tip: Do not fully tighten the pivot bolts while the car is in the air! If you torque them while the suspension is hanging, the rubber bushings will stay "twisted" once the car is on the ground, causing them to tear within months.
Tools You Will Need:
17mm, 19mm, and 21mm Sockets & Wrenches
Breaker Bar or Impact Wrench
Ball Joint Separator (or a heavy hammer)
Torque Wrench
Floor Jack and Jack Stands
Steps Covered:
Wheel Removal & Safety: Proper jacking points for the CX-5.
The Pinch Bolt: Removing the 14mm/17mm bolt holding the ball joint to the knuckle.
Separating the Joint: Using a pry bar to pop the control arm down and out of the spindle.
Main Pivot Bolts: Removing the horizontal front bolt and the two vertical rear bushing bolts.
The Swap: Comparing the old torn bushings to the new units.
Installation: Sliding the new arm into the subframe.
The "Clocking" Secret: Lowering the vehicle onto ramps or using a jack to compress the suspension to "Ride Height" before final torquing.
Final Torque: Securing all fasteners to factory spec.
