There are a number of other thermostat videos showing how to replace the thermostat on the TDi engine but there are a few bits that they gloss over.

Hopefully you will find some of my ramblings of use to you. Be prepared for a long and tedious job, it took me all day but that did include cleaning the throttle housing, fighting with some screws that wouldn't come out and fixing a broken clip.

You will definitely need the following tools in addition to a standard set of tools:
1. Torx and spline bits (M6, M8, M12).
2. A ratcheting ring spanner.
3. A pair of hose clip pliers, one of the clips really required the flexible type.

I suspect that I could possibly have done the job without removing the air filter and the bolts holding the fixed metal pipe in place.

Removing the dipstick tube is essential to get clear access to the thermostat. Even when the two mounting bolts have been removed the stat is a tight fit in the block. You need to use something to lever it out and the new one can only be pulled into the block using the two bolts.
