The timing belt must be removed before the thermostat can be accessed on an Audi A6 2.7L. To do this, you'll need to remove the timing belt cover and the serpentine belt and tensioner as well as the power steering pulley. Once these have been removed, you can then loosen the timing belt tensioner and pull the belt out of the way. After that, you can access the thermostat and replace it if necessary. Its a good idea to drain the cooling system prior to removing the thermostat as this will reduce the likelihood of making a big mess.
