How to Replace the Starter Motor on a 2008 Toyota Yaris Manual Transmission

🔧 Tools & Materials Needed
✅ New or rebuilt starter motor
✅ Ratchet and socket set (10mm, 12mm, 14mm sockets)
✅ Jack and jack stands, or ramps to get under the car

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery (Safety First!)
🔹 Before disconnecting the battery, now is the time to drive your car on ramps, or jack up the car and secure it with jack stands for better access.
🔹 Open the hood and locate the battery.
🔹 Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative (-) terminal to avoid short circuits.

Step 2: Locate the Starter Motor
🔹 The starter motor on a 2008 Toyota Yaris Manual is mounted near the bottom front of the engine, close to the radiator fan. (thumbnail image)
🔹 If you have an automatic transmission, the starter is near the back of the engine and may be harder to reach.

Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connections
🔹 Locate the two electrical connectors on the starter:
1. A thick power cable (12mm nut) → Remove this with a 12mm socket. (not shown in the video)
2. A small signal wire (push-in connector) → Gently unplug this.

(Steps 3 and 4 are mixed together in the video)

Step 4: Remove the Starter Bolts
🔹 The starter motor is secured with two 14mm bolts.
🔹 Use a ratchet with an extension to reach them more easily.

Step 5: Install the New Starter
🔹 Once everything is removed, wiggle the starter out carefully. Mine was stuck due to heat and grime buildup.
🔹 Position the new starter motor in the same way as the old one.
🔹 Thread in the two 14mm bolts and tighten them securely.
🔹 Reconnect the power cable (12mm nut) and tighten it.
🔹 Plug in the small signal wire. (not shown in the video)

Step 6: Reconnect the Battery & Test
🔹 Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
🔹 Start the car to check if the new starter engages properly.

✅ Final Checks
✔ Ensure all bolts and wires are secure.
✔ If the car doesn’t start or you hear clicking, check battery voltage and connections.
✔ Dispose of the old starter at a local auto parts store (many offer a core refund).
