Time to get the MK3 Golf GTI daily driver back to full health! 🏁🛠️🏎️💨
In today's episode of ADHD Customs, I’m tackling the water pump and thermostat replacement on my MK3 Golf 2.0L 8-valve. While many tutorials say you have to strip the entire front end and remove the power steering belt, I’ve found a much quicker way to get the job done by just removing the alternator and its bracket.
In this video:
The Quick Method: Eyeing up the clearance and deciding to leave the bottom belt in place, saving hours of extra work.
Alternator & Bracket Removal: Removing the 13mm bolts and the spring-loaded alternator to gain access to the water pump hidden underneath.
Water Pump Swap: Pulling the old pump, cleaning the mating surface on the engine block, and fitting the new unit with a fresh O-ring.
Thermostat Upgrade: Carefully swapping the thermostat and its plastic housing to ensure the engine hits its operating temperature correctly.
The Reinstall: Getting the pulley on (the right way around!), refitting the alternator, and setting the correct belt tension.
Testing & Bleeding: Refilling the system with G12-style coolant, bleeding the air out, and watching the fan kick in at the perfect temperature.
The Golf is officially holding its coolant and staying "bang on" in the middle of the temperature gauge again.
