►Part of the wonderful innovation of the DSG gearbox is its associated dual-mass flywheel or DMF. They've been around for decades now and exist for manual gearboxes, too, and no matter the application, they'll eventually wear to the point of breaking. Replacing a dual-mass flywheel isn't much more involved than changing a regular one, but it still involves removing the gearbox to gain access to the back of the engine. The Mk6 Golf and Jetta platforms are fairly easy to work with in a DIY setting. Bolts, nuts, and clips are all fairly accessible, and removing the gearbox doesn't require any specialist tools, just patience and care.

A worn DMF is a noisy one. Its moveable internal components spend tens of thousands of hours spinning around within the flywheel, and that leads to worn springs and arms within. They'll rattle at idle and as you drive down the road, making a loud metallic sound.
